Happy Harvest!

Justin Trails Resort gardens are spectacular! Hosting weddings causes me to have deadlines to get the gardens in great shape. Thanks to Don, Dawn, Andreas, Patti, Katie and Corey for your work in pruning, weeding, mulching the gardens and cutting the grass.

The new wildflower garden planted by Cindy Ramseyer is alive with color of purple coneflower, black eye Susan and more. Another great photo backdrop packed with natural color!

Melanie Pehling of Farm Girl Adventures, is joining our team on Saturdays: October 16, November 13 and December 4.

Mel sees herself as a fledgling steward of a 10-acre farmette with horses, chickens, guinea and gardens, She is one of those gals who is pluckily finding her hidden can-do-Farm-Girl inner strength as the challenges that come when partnering with nature happen…providing jolting, ability stretching hands-on opportunities. Therefore, Farm-Girl Adventures has grown out of her own life experiences, and a heart’s desire to “pass on country wisdom through empowering know-how classes, activities, get togethers, and always, with time for a cup of tea.” Mel’s hope is to be pass on encouragement to the women of our area just like her heroine–Mary Jane Butters (if you’re curious, go to maryjanesfarm.org be ready to be inspired!)
As Mel puts t ogether her part of the upcoming activities, she will share and engage you in the activities that will encourage mirth, goodwill, and tasty morsels focusing on the produce of each season’s harvest. Join Cindy Ramseyer, botanist and naturalist, for a woods walk Saturday, April 24 at 10:00 A.M. At Justin Trails Resort, she has found numerous ecosystems including oak savannas, dry mesic forest, and spring fed draws. Following the Aldo Leopold and John Muir traditions that led Senator Gaylord Nelson to begin Earth Day 40 years ago celebrate Earth Month with time spent in a quiet, peaceful privately owned natural area here at Justin Trails Resort. Bring your camera.

This past Sunday Cindy, Valerie and I walked the forest getting photos and identifying wild ginger, Partridgeberry, early meadow rue, skunk cabbage, wild geranium, and Rattlesnake orchid to name a few.

Finish the hike with a local native lunch of watercress and organic greens, nutritious, delicious Swedish nettle soup, rhubarb crisp and Pepin Orchards fresh squeezed apple juice.

Join us for the hike and lunch for $14.95. Lunch will be served in Justin Eatery Restaurant. Donna will share her favorite passage from Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. Stay for the weekend at the regular rate and this wonderful treat is included in the rate. Limited to 15 people. Please call 1-800-488-4521 to reserve your spot today!

Spring Delights at Justin Trails Resort

The purple Muscari Armeniacum are naturalizing beautifully.
The white snow drops are blooming on the south side of the house!

March Madness!

Manic Monday special for March:
Two people may stay in any suite for $99/night. Cabins are $175/night for two people.

Bring your friends and family or just get away with your special someone!

We had a great work weekend pulling dead elms and invasive shrubs from the woods north and west of the buildings. What gorgeous mama and papa oaks were hiding behind the box elder trees! Come see the new view.

We have another Handy Person Special coming up March 19-21 which will include some work in cutting 4 inch oak trees for shiitake mushrooms we plan to propagate. We’ll also be using a chipper/shredder to create mulch to protect the trails. Don and I attended the Organic Farming Conference in La Crosse to learn additional strategies in transitioning to organic production. We plan to occasionally add mushrooms to the breakfast menu. Menu for this weekend Handy Person Special is potato soup and corn bread for lunch, for dinner roast venison, root vegetables and lemon pie.

Previous guests have great things to say about work weekends.
“It felt so good to sweat and get my hands dirty!” “The community spirit you create with the group is awesome. We are supportive of your efforts to transition to organic care of your beautiful land.”
“We appreciate knowing we can bring our children to play and hike in a clean environment.”

The Disc Golf Course is open and mud season is over! The grassy paths are great for hiking. It’s a great time to get out, relax and enjoy the fresh air, clear your head. There is plenty of availability!
