Our first challenge in 1986 was to create a 10 mile system of cross-country skiing and hiking trails. During warmer months our 12 foot wide trails are grassy and mowed weekly. Walking barefoot across the valley floor along our Bambi-Eze trail is a surefire way to feel at peace with nature. Funny thing, during these barefoot walks our Siberian Huskies seem to feel grounded too even though they are always barefoot. Our other three trails cover meadows, valleys, woodland, gentle slopes and steep hills. Each trail offers varying degrees of fitness challenge and opportunities to catch a glimpse of birds, wildlife, interesting trees and native plants. Like our lodging, each trail provides distinctly different opportunities and choices. Click here for our trail map. This topographical map shows our easy to most difficult trails, 20 feet of elevation change between each set of lines and the routes of our two challenging 18-basket disc golf courses.
Feeders hung just outside your breakfast table offer glimpses of “early birds.” Especially in early morning bird songs are easier to identify as cool air carries songs further and louder. Bird watchers are thrilled with the large variety of birds found on our property. Birds are made welcome with feeders hanging on The Lodge, flowers, shrubs and trees for food and habitat. Songbirds are found near our buildings. You will find hawks and larger birds on the trails. Multiple times during the year a bird count is taken at Justin Trails Resort. The list of bird species changes with each new count. Evidence of this can be observed each week or two as migrating birds bring new songs, calls and birds. Within 25 miles of Justin Trails Resort, you’ll find birding by bike, canoe and horse. Disc golf is a sustainable eco-friendly sport played in the great outdoors. Expect a mix of wide open fairways, dramatic elevation changes and tightly wooded shots along Bambi Lane. There are two 18-hole professional courses at Justin Trails Resort. Classic Course follows our left hand valley and is about a mile in length. It takes a foursome about 2 hours to play. Big Brother following our right hand valley just outside The Lodge offers more of a challenge and takes about 3 ½ hours. The tee pads are 5′ by 12′ concrete and the baskets are Mac3. The Classic Course was designed by professional disc golfer and course designer, Don “Duster” Hoffman and Mike Cozzens of Sandy Point Resort, Lac De Flambeau WI.
Hand feed our gentle llamas Dusty & Rusty (Rusty is “rust-colored” & Dusty is off-white with brown spots). Visit with them in their paddocks. Each spring the llamas receive their “summer haircuts” and their wool is woven into rugs you’ll find throughout our resort. Just over one of our hills is Brownderosa Llamas. Dr. Kristy Brown tends a herd of 50 well trained llamas that are safe for kids to handle so a llama trek can be a family friendly outdoor activity. Hiking is a healthy way to enjoy the outdoors and llamas love hiking. As an added bonus, the llamas can carry all your water, food and gear. Llamas are willing companions to help you enjoy beautiful scenic vistas and a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Kristy Brown leads scheduled llama treks throughout the Kickapoo Valley Reserve and also may be contacted to schedule a trek onsite here at Justin Trails Resort. Considered the first rail-to-trail in the United States, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail is one of the most popular trails in the country. Must-see tunnel #3 is so long (3/4 of a mile) you won’t see “the light at the end of the tunnel” until you are inside. As you approach the tunnel, you will feel the cool air and see small streams on either side of the trail. Speeds Bicycle Shop in Sparta provides Bike Trail Passes, bikes, parking and shuttle service for groups of up to 80 people. They have everything from mountain bikes to bikes with kiddy trailers, tandems and the latest in recumbent bikes, trikes & tandems. The Kickapoo River has been a favorite among canoeists for many years. The word “Kickapoo” is from the Native American Algonquian language meaning “he who goes here, then there.” Translated locally as the “crooked river,” it certainly lives up to its name, meandering its way along a 125-mile course that covers only 65 miles “as the crow flies.” The shallow, gently flowing river is tame enough for the beginner but scenic enough for the advanced paddler, as well. The upper stretch of the river from Ontario to La Farge is arguably the most beautiful, if not the most accessible for the public to enjoy. * The beautifully crafted text above was copied directly from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve website.
