Traveling Green? We’re a certified Travel Green Wisconsin Inn. We recently upcycled our 1919 timber frame and created an Elegant Barn for weddings, retreats, conferences, graduation, anniversary events and a dance hall. We added geothermal heat to the entire lower level and bathrooms in the loft. The photo above shows the coils installed in the lower level of our Elegant Barn. Each toilet has two flush levers: the green uses a small amount of water and the silver deploys a “usual” amount of water. Farmer Ed rents 50 acres on which he grows organic alfalfa, corn or soy beans. In addition gardeners grow organic fruits and vegetables on 1.5 acres that they sell at local farmer’s markets. We’re proud to let you know 100% of their income comes from the farming they do at Justin Trails Resort. Below is a picture of our compost bins. As you can see, we go through a lot of eggs during breakfast!
If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly resort, then you are in luck! Travel Green Wisconsin is a voluntary, affordable program that reviews, certifies and recognizes tourism businesses that have made a commitment to continuously improve their operations in order to reduce their environmental and social impact. This program helps businesses evaluate their operations, set goals and take specific actions toward environmental, social and economic sustainability.
We are also actively involved in land restoration and Don & Donna Justin won one of the 2013 Aldo Leopold Restoration Awards – the Virginia M. Kline Award for Community-Based Ecological Restoration. Restoring naturally occurring burr oak savannah and goat prairies by controlling invasive species, revitalizing native plants and proactively reseeding wildflowers are the focus of our plan. To the right is a photo of a controlled burn we did during the fall of 2012. At the very top is a photo of birch trees and beautiful fall leaves which shows what the controlled burn area looks like in fall of 2013. The location of these photos is at the foot of the last hill of our Big Buck ski trail.
Marvel at our star-studded night skies. On clear or even partly cloudy nights you’ll see zillions of stars, constellations and more. To your right is a photograph of the Milky Way dominating the sky above our Elegant Barn. Dave Greer, one of our guests, took this amazing photograph September 13, 2012. Our dark night skies are unclouded by urban light pollution and you’ll see across two and a half million light-years to the Andromeda Galaxy, the most distant thing you can see with your naked eye. Check it out for yourself.
From the Room Journal:
We’ll use the last page of this journal to write how very much we enjoyed our stay.
“The peace & tranquility is a welcome respite from city stresses. This is a wonderful place, to retreat, recharge & remember what’s important. It’s stepping back to simpler times. Thanks for the great weekend.” Karen & Wallie Brookfield WI
