Forestry Hike at Justin Trails near Sparta June 8

May 15, 2013 by innkeeper

On Saturday June 8, 2013, the Kickapoo Woods Cooperative invites the public to the property of co-op members Don and Donna Justin to see their approach to land management, including goat grazing, selective use of fire, and mechanical controls to manage invasive vegetation and encourage natural tree regeneration in the forest. The Kickapoo Woods Cooperative’s mission is to provide forestry education, management and marketing services to residents of the Kickapoo valley and neighboring watersheds that will improve the forestry resource for the region.

goats

Twice a year the Justin’s bring in goats, and use girdling and burning to reduce unwanted brush. The goats will be on-site on the day of the hike, June 8, and their owner, Ben Robel of Vegetation Management, will be on hand to talk about the goat grazing services he offers.

Don & Donna are re-establishing oak savannah, goat prairie, and woodland habitat with the help of a forestry mower partially funded by the Fish and Wildlife Service.  LIP (Landowner Incentive Program) and WHIP (Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program) help support their burning regime, and an EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentive Program) grant helped them plant their steepest and most erosion-prone fields to non-warm season grasses and pollinator strips.

The Justin’s have used cost sharing grants from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service and US Fish and Wildlife Service. They have also worked with Cindy and Charles Ranseyer of Nature’s Keepers Services LLC, who will lead the tour and discussions along with the landowners. The group will also see areas where woodland burning has led to a resurgence of native understory plants.

Coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be available before and after the hike. For more information, contact Lila Marmel at 608-624-5269; sunmoon@mwt.net. For help with directions, go to justintrails.com or call Don and Donna at 608-269-4521 or 800-488-4521.

Hunt for Spring Ephemerals

March 30, 2013 by innkeeper

Lace up your hiking shoes you’ll find spring ephemeral plants on the south facing slopes and in woodland areas of Justin Trails Resort. Ephemeral plants are marked by short life cycles. Spring ephemerals are perennial plants that emerge quickly in the spring and die back to their underground parts after a short growth and reproduction phase.

In spring hunt for these ephemerals at Justin Trails Resort:

  • Wild Geranium
  • Solomon’s  Seal
  • Blood Root
  • Trillium
  • Trout Lily

600px-Wild_Columbine

Wild columbine (Aquilegia Canadensis) Flowers are 1-2 inches long and have yellow petals with a red spur and red sepals. They appear in late spring, nodding on stems above the leaves. The round end of the spur contains nectar, which is sought by butterflies and hummingbirds.

Trout Lily 800px-Erythronium_americanum_full_Radnor_Lake

Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum) is a herbaceous flowering plant. The common name “Trout lily” comes from the appearance of its gray-green leaves mottled with brown or gray, which allegedly resemble the coloring of brook trout. It blooms in early spring with nodding one-inch yellow flowers, the petals and petal-like sepals (recurved upward. Each plant sends up a single flower stem with a pair of leaves. Trout lilies grow in colonies that can be up to 300 years old.

Birds of Spring

March 30, 2013 by innkeeper

This spring bird’s name couldn’t be more apropos…

brown headed cowbird 800px-Molothrus_ater_2

The Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater)

Brown-headed Cowbirds  occur in open or semi-open country and often travel in flocks, sometimes mixed with Red-winged Blackbirds (particularly in spring) and Bobolinks (particularly in fall), as well as Common Grackle or European Starlings. These birds forage on the ground, often following grazing animals such as horses and cows to catch insects stirred up by the larger animals. They mainly eat seeds and insects. Before European settlement, the Brown-headed Cowbird followed bison herds across the prairies. Their parasitic nesting behavior complemented this nomadic lifestyle.

This bird is a small brood parasite: it lays its eggs in the nests of other small passerines (perching birds), particularly those that build cup-like nests. The Brown-headed Cowbird eggs have been documented in nests of at least 220 host species, including hummingbirds and raptors. The young cowbird is fed by the host parents at the expense of their own young. Brown-headed Cowbird females can lay 36 eggs in a season. More than 140 different species of birds are known to have raised young cowbirds.

The Brown-headed Cowbird is typical in general shape but is distinguished by a finch-like head and beak and is smaller than most icterids. The adult male is iridescent black in color with a brown head. The adult female is slightly smaller and is dull grey with a pale throat and very fine streaking on the underparts. The total length is 6.3–8.7 inches and the average wingspan is 14 inches.

Karst Topography = Outstanding Trout Fishing

March 3, 2013 by innkeeper

You’ll find outstanding trout fishing near Justin Trails Resort.

We’re located in the Driftless Area where you’ll find the largest concentration of cold water streams in the world including thousands of miles of spring creek trout streams. Karst topography is found throughout the area, characterized by shallow limestone bedrock, caves, sinkholes, springs and cold streams.

Karst strains the impurities out of the water and cools it. These cool waters feed springs and cause superb trout habitat and give us the absolutely outstanding trout fishing we have in the area.
