One of the things that sets Justin Trails Resort apart is our location and surroundings. We’re located in Wisconsn’s Driftless Region; an area that is so incredibly unique and beautiful. Surprisingly, we find that the term “Driftless” is something few people actually know much about. The Driftless Area is a region like no other in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. The unique geography of this region, where you’ll find deeply carved river valleys and coldwater trout streams surrounded by sharply rising limestone bluffs, is unusual for the Midwest. Our region was left untouched by the glacial drift and other forces that shaped and flattened the remainder of the Midwest, thus leaving us “driftless.” Book a getaway at our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast, and give yourself plenty of time to come explore the fascinating history and diverse landscapes of Wisconsin’s incredible Driftless Region.
Explore the Driftless Region of Wisconsin
In total, the Driftless Region covers about 20,000 square miles in western Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa, southeastern Minnesota, and extreme northwestern Illinois. This area is home to a variety of landscapes, including forests, prairie remnants, wetlands, and grasslands. These diverse habitats also provide shelter for a wide range of plants and wildlife, including many rare species. Take a hike through the beautiful hills and bluffs in Driftless Wisconsin, and you’ll likely encounter some of the rare species of snakes, birds, or plants that inhabit this area, all while enjoying scenery unlike anywhere else in the state.
In 2018, a new film featuring Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, called Decoding the Driftless, was produced. This feature-length film covers not only the incredible origins of this region, but also the diversity and resources of the Driftless Region. The film includes some rare footage of the area, and portrays this part of Wisconsin in a way never seen before. We hosted the film crew for several nights at Justin Trails Resort during the filming process, and highly recommend you watch their finished product. It’s truly an incredible work, and a beautiful adventure worth taking.
