There are a ton of excellent Wisconsin bike trails across the diverse terrain of our state, and the Elroy-Spart Trail is one of the greats. The very first rails-to-trails path, this trail has paved the way, and there are now more than 100 railroad bike trails spanning about 2,000 miles in Wisconsin. The Badger State also ranks in the top ten as one of the best bicycle-friendly states by The League of American Bicyclists, all due to the fantastic work the state has put into these Wisconsin bike trails.
Justin Trails Resort is the ideal lodging option for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. This is especially true for those hoping to explore the nearby Wisconsin bike trails and the Elroy-Sparta Trail, which is only a matter of minutes from our resort. Located right in the heart of the Driftless Area, our 200-acre property offers a peaceful respite from daily life with hiking trails, two professional disc golf courses, and sweeping lawns for yard games.
You’ll have your pick of lodging accommodations, from luxury farmhouse bed and breakfast suites and a Camping Cabin to our Sunrise Cottage and Scandinavian Full-Scribe Log Cabins. Each option has its own personality, charm, and laid-back warmth, but every choice includes luxurious amenities, breakfast each morning in The Lodge, and welcoming service and hospitality.

The Elroy-Sparta Trail is one of the Best Wisconsin Bike Trails
When you start planning your next cycling excursion to explore the bounty of Wisconsin bike trails, you’ll want to add the Elroy-Sparta Trail to your itinerary. The path is a 32.5-mile route connecting the two towns of Elroy and Sparta. It premiered in 1967 and was designed for foot, bike, and equestrian traffic—today, the trail sees more than 60,000 cyclists annually. But even with that many riders, the course never feels busy or crowded. In fact, you’ll likely feel like you have the whole 30-mile stretch to yourself.
One of the biggest draws to the Elroy-Sparta Trail are passing through the three famous train tunnels—one stretches an impressive 3,800 feet (more than ten football fields) and the other two at 1,600 feet. These tunnels are dark and cavernous; be sure to have a headlamp or bring a flashlight! The rest of the crushed limestone trail leads you through pretty forests with rolling hills, wetlands, and prairies. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of places to take a break; some spots are even equipped with restrooms and water fountains.
We suggest renting from Speed’s Bike Shop in Sparta for those who might not have their own bike but still want to enjoy the Elroy-Sparta Trail. They also sell the needed bike passes ($5 per day or $20 for an annual pass), and they even have a shuttle service to your choice of starting point so that you can head back to your desired destination. The Elroy-Sparta is, hands down, one of the best Wisconsin bike trails, and if you’re a cycling fan, then it’s a must!
