The Lady of Guadalupe Day Trip Travelers Overlook

Every fall, guests come back from a day at the Lady of Guadalupe shrine saying much the same thing: You have to go. Some places make you wonder how you missed them for so long.

We've sent so many guests south; we know the day by heart: the drive, the peaceful walk, and the quiet ride back. It's an outing that stays with you, especially with a cozy room waiting at the end of it.

Still deciding on dates? Pick your room first, then let us walk you through the rest.

Where Is the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe From Sparta?

It's closer than you'd guess, which is half the surprise. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe sits just south of La Crosse, about 35 minutes from our front porch here on the farm. You'll follow the river valley south, crossing near the wooden bridges that give Sparta its charm. By the time guests reach the gate, they've told us the drive has already worked its magic.

Why This Quiet Shrine Is Worth the Drive

We didn't know the full story ourselves until guests kept asking about it, so we went looking. The Lady of Guadalupe story began in 1531, when a farmer named Juan Diego saw an apparition on a hillside near Mexico City, Mexico. Bishop Raymond Burke built our local shrine here decades later, so Wisconsin pilgrims wouldn't have to travel that far to feel close to her.

Our local shrine sits on 100 acres of bluff country, dedicated back in 2008, not far off our own 200 acres. Some guests come for the history, others for the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe itself. Either way, we hear the same word back afterward: peaceful.

What You'll See Along the Meditation Path

Once you park, the walk is the whole reason for the day. Don't rush it. The path unfolds in one clear sequence, built for slow walks.

Here's how we'd make our way through it:

  • Pilgrim Center: grab a map here and get your bearings first.

  • Votive Candle Chapel: small and dim, and where most guests slow down the most.

  • Rosary Walk: shaded and easy underfoot, built for a slower pace.

  • Stations of the Cross: set into the hillside, spaced for slow reflection.

  • Shrine Church: the last stop, and usually the reason people made the trip.

It reminds us of the trails we keep groomed here at the resort, just larger and more reverent. Give yourself at least an hour. No watch-checking allowed.

What to Know Before You Go

Here's what we'd want to know before making this drive ourselves. Admission is free, and the grounds stay open daily from morning until early evening. Modest dress is appreciated, so save the shorts for later in your trip.

The shrine asks that pets sit this one out, though yours are always welcome back here with us. The main path is paved and gently sloped, and a shuttle is available if anyone in your group needs it.

For lunch, the on-site café serves something simple. Or hold off and grab a bite in La Crosse on your way back north. Amish Country makes a fitting second day, since it moves at just as easy a pace.

Where to Shop for Guadalupe Keepsakes Nearby

Before you head back to the car, stop by Flores Mariae, the shrine's own gift shop. It's the real, on-the-ground source for Lady of Guadalupe rosaries, medals, and small keepsakes, right where the story lives. We'd rather point you here than to a shelf back home. It's a small stop, but it rounds out the visit nicely.

A Few Questions We Hear Most Often

These are the three questions we hear most, usually over breakfast the morning after. A little context goes a long way, since this shrine gets confused with other Marian sites more than you'd expect.

Is the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe a Vatican-recognized apparition site?

Where did the original Our Lady of Guadalupe apparition take place?

Are bus and group tours available?

None of that changes what the day is about. If anything, knowing the real story makes the walk feel even more meaningful.

Let the Quiet Follow You Home to Justin Trails

We're glad your Lady of Guadalupe day trip finds its way back to our door. The way back always feels quicker than the drive down. Grab dinner at one of the Wisconsin supper clubs we love sending guests to; brandy old-fashioned optional. By the time you turn up our lane, our pet llamas, Porter and Stout, will be waiting by the fence. Then, that quiet from the shrine will still be with you.

If today turned romantic, see how other couples plan their own quiet getaway with us. Either way, book your cabin or cottage. Then, let the rest of your stay settle in at its own easy pace.
