Land Management at Justin Trails Resort

Land Management at the Justin Trails Resort in WisconsinLast month, we wrote a blog post all about the unique area of Wisconsin that we’re located in, called the Driftless Area. Our location is one of the many things that sets Justin Trails Resort apart from our competition. Our farm and resort is nestled in one of the many picturesque coulee’s of the Driftless Region near Sparta, and about 30 minutes east of La Crosse.  We are situated on 200 acres, and we are incredibly proud of the land we’re on, as it has been a part of our family since 1916. Within our 200 acres, we have 50 acres of organic farmland, on which we grow certified organic alfalfa and corn. The remaining 150 acres are composed of oak savanna and woodland forest restoration. Thanks to our stewardship over the years, Justin Trails has been awarded as one of the top ten Eco-Luxury Inns from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism; an honor we are quite proud of. Come explore our beautiful portion of the world this spring and summer. Book a room at our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast today.

Taking Care of the Land at Justin Trails Resort

The land at Justin Trails Resort initially started out as a family farm. It wasn’t until 1985 that we started to make improvements to the property, such as cross country ski/hiking trails, and later adding accommodations to the property. Over the years, many renovations and additions have taken place, including the addition of cabins, a wedding & event barn, and 2 disc-golf courses. But through it all, there has always been one constant; the love and care of the land underneath it all. In fact, we’ve recently worked closely with local botanists and ecological foresters to manage and restore our land. In this joint endeavor, we’ve been able to carefully get rid of unnecessary brush and invasive species in the area, thereby regenerating high quality habitat.

Since we have an organic farm, it was important to us to bring in as many low-impact methods of land management and restoration as possible. A variety of methods were used to restore our surrounding woodlands, including a herd of goats for clearing underbrush, hand-pulling invasive and overgrown species, and prescribed burns where needed. You can learn more about our land management practices, and see some of the results, in this short video:

Relax at our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast

Whether you’re looking to stay in our farmhouse suites, cottage, or our log cabins, there truly is no place like our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast. Next time you visit us at Justin Trails Resort, take some time to meander along our hiking trails or play on our disc-golf course. There, you’ll discover the marker trees referenced in the video, which are an incredibly rare and beautiful sight to behold. This spring, it’s also the perfect time to break out the binoculars and enjoy a little birdwatching on our property. Wisconsin itself is home to over 300 species of birds, and our 200 acres of woodland, ponds and organic farm land offer them plenty of varied habitat. Whatever it is you choose to do, we have little doubt you’ll learn to love the property as much as we do. Book your stay at our Wisconsin resort today.
