Hiking and Llama Treks at Justin Trails Resort

June 2nd, 2011 by innkeeper

Bring comfortable hiking shoes/boots to enjoy hiking the miles of trails here on the property. All trails are loops that allow for short walks or connect with other trails for a longer excursion. There are easy trails like Bambi Lane. But there is also 280 feet of elevation change on our property, if you want vigorous exercise or prefer to hike to great vistas.

Justin Trails Resort LLC has many miles of trails to explore. Get on your hiking shoes and climb the hills and valleys right outside your cabin. The area is filled with native habitat that contributes to the beauty of the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin. Clear your mind and enjoy the scenic trails in every season.

Hiking to the Pond
“The Pond” was created in 1961 as a Soil Conservation project for watershed management. It is spring fed from the west, southwest and northwest coulees and with snow melt and heavy rainfall. The disc golf long tee for the Number 11 basket is to the top of the dam. The top of the dam is also part of the trail system for Bambi Lane and Doe Chase. Deer, muskrats, fox, birds, wood ducks, geese and mallards depend on the water in the pond.

To honor our daughter, Dawn, we are renaming the Pond “Dawn’s Pond” as that is one of her favorite childhood memories of hiking with Mom or as a young child hitching a ride on Mom’s shoulders. She also participated in planting white pine trees on the hillside near the pond with her Mom and Dad.

In spring, summer and fall The Pond is a leisurely 1/2 mile stroll through open fields and a bit of forest. It is great fun to listen to the tadpole’s evening chorus. In winter this same path is known as Bambi Lane, an easy trail for skiers who’ve been on skis before.

For longer hikes, stroll the other ski and snowshoe trails where the grass is cut for easy walking. The short grass helps everyone follow the trail back to the cabins, Lodge or  yellow foursquare house.

Mountain bike on the trails
Trails are marked and a map provided. A helmet is required. Choose between single and double track trails. Double track twelve to fifteen foot-wide grassy trails provide a more rigorous trail than black-top or gravel. Grassy trails are trimmed monthly. Steepness of terrain determines the challenge of trail and is comparable to the ski trail map. Big Buck Trail has the steepest inclines/descents. Rugged foot paths for single track through the woods have not been bull-dozed, but do not have rock jumps. The small trees and briers are cut for the snowshoe season. There are ten miles of single track and ten miles of double track trails for your enjoyment.

A Wisconsin Safari ride is available to guests who cannot walk the trails. We have a Polaris Ranger with a bench seat to accommodate 2 passengers for a guided ride through the trails.

Bird Watching in Western Wisconsin

June 1st, 2011 by innkeeper

Birds are made welcome with feeders hanging on The Lodge, flowers, shrubs and trees for food and habitat. Songbirds are found near our buildings. You will find hawks and larger birds on the trails.

Bird watchers are thrilled with the large variety of birds found on our property. In our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast library we have “Birds of Wisconsin, Field Guide” by Stan Tekiela available for your use to identify any species unknow to you. We have the videos: “Hummingbirds; Jewels of the Forest” and “Bats; the True Story” for your viewing pleasure.

Song birds: dark-eyed juncos, American gold finches, northern cardinals, nut hatches, downy woodpeckers, humming birds, rose breasted grosbeak, house finches, house wren, black-capped chickadee, tufted titmouse, American robin and Baltimore oriole all make their home around the buildings at Justin Trails Resort.

Wild Birds Unlimited bird food menu available to our birds include: sunflower seeds, Nyjer thistle seed, safflower seeds, peanuts, sugar water and a premium blend of seeds. Bird feeders, a bird bath and heated drinking water bring the birds to the restaurant windows for Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast guests viewing pleasure.

Birds of field and forest near Sparta, Wisconsin include: red-winged blackbirds, American crow, blue jay, brown-headed cowbird, killdeer, mourning doves, wood ducks, great horned owl, ring-necked pheasant, northern harrier, wild turkeys and sandhill cranes. An eagle nest has been spotted east of State Highway 27 about two miles from Justin Trails Resort. Occasionally we see an eagle circling on our property.

Barn swallows are very evident in the compound around the buildings. Barn Swallows make their home in the basement of the barn. They are great fun to watch when mom flies in with food for her babies who are peeping from four yellow mouths wide open. Their swooping flight patterns are so graceful. These industrious birds feed on mosquitoes. The benefit to you is the opportunity to sit outdoors in the evening without mosquito bites.

Bats are seen at dusk as they feed on mosquitoes and other bugs. They can be seen swooping about 12 to 15 feet above ground. The bats are afraid of humans and are very good at avoiding humans.

Visit the Sparta Bed and Breakfast Wisconsin, Justin Trails Resort LLC for a day or a week-long getaway in the peaceful countryside.

Naturally we create joy with quality lodging and recreation in a secluded coulee.

Gardens at Justin Trails

March 3rd, 2011 by innkeeper

Justin Trails Resort gardens have flowers blooming nearly year round: snowdrops on warm March days, delicate yellow crocus, purple hyacinths, fragrant pink crab apple blossoms in April, millions of blue/yellow pansies, maroon primroses in May, pale blue campannella, purple Rhododendron in June, red roses, yellow Stella d ‘Oro day lilies in July, black eyes Susan, lavender hostas, golden evening primrose in August, tall stately, blue delphiniums in September, burgundy, gold, white Chrysanthemums in October, pumpkins and corn shocks for November and evergreen boughs with red ribbons for winter window boxes.

The gardens at Justin Trails Resort LLC have been growing for many years. The oldest members of the garden are 2 huge silver maples approximately 125 years old. The tall white pine was planted in 1950 by Kathryn Justin, Don’s mother. She also planted the 8 foot tall yews in front of the garage, a crab apple tree, seven sisters rose bush and a dozen green hostas.

In 1982, a landscape plan was created to give the yard more green color in winter. The taxus cuspadata under the white pine were planted to steer guests to the front door. Burning bushes, gold finger potentilla, and barberry plants give color, juniper and mugo pines completed the plan.

After opening the bed and breakfast, color became more important. Donna’s favorite shopping places became nurseries, garden centers and green houses. A pink estilbe and dwarf white estilbe bed was planted south of the house. Chocolate ruffles coral bells grace the walkway.

Travertine stone was gathered from Winona, MN to create a patio and stone wall. Fill was added to create a level walkway to the house to eliminate the need for steps. Hydrangeas, smoke bushes, Chinese willow, hostas and an azalea were planted around the Paul Bunyan cabin.

6,000 street bricks were purchased and laid by Don in herringbone, full weave, half weave, and alternate patterns to connect cabins, the house, lodge and Cottage. A split rail fence separates the front of the yard from the neighbor’s cornfield.

Berms of soil with boxwood and arborvitae create outdoor rooms for the foursquare house and Cottage. A fort fence from a B & B in Wauwatosa and globe arborvitae creates privacy for the Little House. A split rail fence and brick path create a garden for Don & Donna at their entrance on the west side of the house. Birds planted wild strawberries.

Two Fat Albert pines, blue spruce, Colorado Spruce, hemlock, Austrian pines, River birch and high bush cranberries grace the former hillside cow yard. Black eyes Susan create a colorful spot next to the windmill. A patch of day lilies, Oriental and Asiatic lilies rotate blooming all summer.

Magnolia, spruce, winterberry, 3 vibernum, and hazelnut bushes have taken over the cornfield north of the Paul Bunyan cabin. Strawberries, hostas, black eyes Susan, evening primrose, buttercups and yarrow bloom profusely throughout the summer. A playhouse and a large grassy area is perfect for families to play games.

Honeysuckle vine graces the arbor, trumpet vines climb the walls of the Comfort Coop and English ivy climbs a lattice fence. Bittersweet climbs the white cow yard fence.

The east garden is bordered with forsythia, white coneflowers, yucca, potentilla, witch hazel, roses and moonbeam coreopsis.

Log chairs, a log swing, glider rockers and Adirondack chairs invite guests to sit a spell. Guests are invited to select plants to purchase for their own gardens. Donna will dig and pot them for you.

A new open porch entrance to the 1920 foursquare house creates a perfect spot for brides to walk to the patio for their wedding ceremony.

Naturally we create joy with quality lodging and recreation in a secluded coulee in the Driftless Area of Southwest Wisconsin.

Winter Activites

March 3rd, 2011 by innkeeper

Azure blue skies of winter beckon a person outdoors: for playing in the snow, an aerobic workout walking up the tubing hill, screaming all the way to the bottom, skate, skiing to the tops of the hills to shush quickly down while training for the American Birkebeiner or learning to skijor with your own dog. Perhaps it’s giving the children an opportunity to try a gentle dog sled ride. Or play disc golf on snowshoes. There is plenty of space for all of these activities at Justin Trails Resort.

All ages welcome. No height or age requirement. Open to the public daily 10-5:00. Trail fee is $5/person. Children 5 and under are free. Ski rental is $10/day and snowshoe rental is $5/day. Tubes are included in the $5 /day pass. Both tubing hills are groomed. Winter trails are groomed for skate skiing and striding or Nordic skiing with a set track. Signs guide you along our trails. Daily snow conditions available at www.skinnyski.com.
It’s easy to bundle up, head right out the back door of your cabin or suite to play in the snow. The Lodge allows you to experience the warm comforts of indoor bathrooms, a snack shop with a gas fireplace with plenty of room to watch the tubers on the tubing hill.

Nordic Skiing
Don Justin grooms 15 km (10 mi.) of 10 to 15 feet wide trails that were created with a bulldozer in 1985. He grooms with a Ski-doo Skandic snowmobile and a Tidd Tech snow tenderizer and track setter for classic and freestyle Nordic skiing. The trails vary in difficulty, length and loop around to bring you back to the Lodge. Some provide great vistas of the surrounding valleys and hills of southwest Wisconsin also known as the Driftless region.

Snowshoe
Snowshoeing trails are footpaths through the woods that have been cleared of blackberries and bramble. We have thirty pairs of snowshoes for adults and children. Brands you may try before purchasing include Red Feather, MSR (Mountain Safety Research) high tech shoes, Little Bear are light weight plastic and traditional wood Wilcox and Williams. Take a night snowshoe hike with the white snow making lights unnecessary.

Snow tube
Snow tubing (carry a tube up the hill and slide down) is a thrill for folks of every age. Snowtubes have a hard plastic bottom. Snowtubing is available on two groomed hills, one 600 feet long and one 1200 feet. We provide a variety of tubes and sleds for your use. Delight yourself flying down the hill during the day or in the evening. The white snow makes lights unnecessary.

Skijor
Skijoring involves a person wearing a harness hitched to a harnessed dog and being pulled across the snow. Bring your own dog or coax George, our Siberian husky. Use the 2K dog trail that is groomed for either skijoriing or skiing with your dog off leash. Dogs are not permitted on the other trails.

Guided Llama trekking
No snow? The llamas, Dusty and Rusty will provide a fun walk to The Pond. We halter and attach a lead rope for you to walk the llamas. One of us will enjoy the trek with you.
